Verdun Town Centre

Having gone to bed early we were up and out by 8.30 am. It was a beautiful journey to Verdun, the sun was shining and the roads were so quiet. I don't think we passed more than 10 cars during the entire hour it took us to get there. We started the day visiting La Citadelle souterraine de Verdun. Nine of us got into a 'Thorpe Park' style train and were transported (somewhat more slowly than anything at Thorpe Park) through underground tunnels as the story of how they had defended the city during the first world war was translated to us through out own little headsets. I didn't get exactly what years it all happened but 1916 seemed important. It was very interesting and really well done. Well worth the 7 euros each - but take a cardi, it was freezing down there.

We then headed into the main town which again was beautiful. The main bars and restaurants lined either side of the river. We stopped for breakfast, coffee, peach tart for me and a pizza for Andrew ... we are on holiday so we can eat what we like!
