We arrived here at around 12.30, the journey was only 2 1/2 hours but it wasn't a particularly pleasant one. Mainly very busy, fast motorway. The terraine has flattened now but still the same fields and fields of vines, no lavender but more sunflowers and this morning I managed to get a few shots of them in full bloom, heads up.
The very nice English speaking receptionist allowed us to check in some 4 hours early and we were like a couple of kids as Christmas when we stepped into the room and saw the French doors on the other side of the bed leading to a small veranda and a swimming pool just a couple of steps beyond.
We spent a few hours more or less alone in the pool and sunbathing on the loungers before I had a long soak in the bath and got changed so that we could go in search of dinner. We followed the directions of the lovely receptionist and walked along the river and into the town of Aigues Mortes itself. The town is mainly inside the walls of a castle, there were streets of houses, shops and restaurants. We found one with friendly, English speaking'ish staff and a menu we could not only understand but afford too. I had moulles and frites (muscles and chips)
Andrew had steak. Happy that we had enjoyed a nice meal at a reasonable price we popped into a sweet shop, it sold mainly nougat and chocolate of all kinds of varieties, the man encouraged us to try and then using the gloves provided we broke off a couple of pieces of nougat and a piece of white chocolate with caramel. It all came to very nearly 15 euro's which totally blew the budget for the day. Still, we were able to laugh about it all the way home and when we sat out on the veranda with a glass of wine we savoured every gold encrusted mouthful.
