I started today's training session with a little bit of mental arithmetic. I have decided that whilst I'm not going for anything completely daft, I would really like to finish this half marathon in around 2.30 to 2.40 hours. In order to achieve this I need to be running at between 11.5 and 12 mins a mile. What I just couldn't work out was how many kilometers an hour I needed to be doing. Anyway, I googled it and it seems I need to be doing somewhere between 8.5 km (12 minute mile) and 8.78 km (11 minute mile).
What I've decided to do is to go back to the walking and running, but when I run I'm going to try and go at the new, faster rate!. Today I walked to 2 minutes, then did one minute run, one minute walk up to 40 minutes, in total I went 4.58 kilometers. On Thursday I'm going to try and run for a little bit longer at the new pace. My thinking is that if I put my feet down at the same pace but attempt to take longer steps then it could work. It didn't seem to require quite as much energy as my previous attempts where I was taking more, shorter steps and going up and down a lot!.
I shall give it a go for a few weeks and see if things improve any.
